How would the you of 15 or 20 years ago react to seeing you stand on a scale today?

Would you be shocked? Surprised? Disappointed?

The sad truth is that most men gain weight under the radar over the years. It happens slowly and insidiously so you don’t feel the cumulative effects all at once.

But think for a moment.

If you instantly went from feeling how you did 20 years ago to how you feel now for weight, energy and overall health right now, how motivated would you be to make the changes you need to make to get back to how you were?

I want that mental picture to stay with you as I discuss this topic. That can be a motivating factor for you to follow what I’m about to share.

Your physical health affects your mental health. Which means your physical health will improve your business performance.

In other words, the health secrets I’m sharing with you today will help you jump out of bed every morning excited for your workday. You’ll have more energy and vigor, and you won’t dread work.

You also won’t avoid stepping on the scale anymore. You’ll be happy to see your weight dropping.

You won’t mind seeing yourself in the mirror.

And your wife—well, let’s just say she’ll like the results too. 😉

So what’s the key?

Those are some big promises. Some big benefits.

I’m sure you want to know what you need to do to get them.

This is all you have to do to get those benefits: be happier.

Now, I’m not saying you’re unhappy, that you hate your work, your life or anything else.

What I’m saying is that specific actions you take release a feel-good chemical in your brain. Some of the actions that produce this chemical lead to an unhealthy lifestyle and less overall happiness, while other ways to manufacture it lead to a healthy lifestyle with more overall happiness.

The chemical? Serotonin.

So, improving your body’s ability to manufacture and utilize serotonin, to me, is a serious key to weight loss, for the following reasons.

  1. Serotonin is an appetite suppressant.
  2. It improves your mood.
  3. Serotonin stifles snack food cravings.
  4. It also gives you more energy and focus to get things done.

Knowing how your body creates and uses serotonin is a fantastic way to lose weight.

Once you know, you can plan your life to get serotonin the right way that will help you lose weight instead of the wrong way that will help you pack on pounds.

Unhealthy, unhappy serotonin

Let’s talk about a couple things that can hamper your body’s ability to produce serotonin first.

1. Stress

Stress—which most often ties to work, family and money—produces both adrenaline and cortisol. Cortisol is basically the anti-serotonin. And adrenaline and cortisol both hamper your body’s ability to produce serotonin.

I’ve cherry-picked a few causes of stress that most of the men we work with experience or have experienced to some degree.

  • Career discontent.
  • Too much to do.
  • Long hours.
  • Family discontent or problems.

When I was in the restaurant industry, I felt all of the above. I never told anyone about it, and that made the stress even worse.

2. Sugar and carbs

This one’s a little bit weird. Sugar and carbs directly contribute to increased serotonin levels in your body. So when your body’s low on serotonin, it will ask for sugar and carbs as a shortcut to more.

That’s often why you reach for sugar and carbs—they’re quick mood boosters that lead to the release of serotonin in your brain.

Sugar, for instance, makes insulin, and insulin helps the building blocks of serotonin get into your brain.

However, if you rely on sugar for serotonin boosts, your body will get addicted even as you make less insulin to carry the feel-good building blocks to your brain. In other words, if you cut back on sugar, even though you’re introducing less serotonin, what you do produce will be more accessible and usable.

Healthy, happy serotonin

Head back to that mental picture we drew up in the first few paragraphs. To that youthful version of yourself seeing how you’ve turned out 15 or 20 years later.

Being happier and more productive are keys to losing weight. So is this chemical.

Because I want that to stick with you as I discuss the best ways to bring serotonin into your life.

See, you can get serotonin by eating junk food. But that’s not going to help you lose weight. And, as I mentioned before, it will cut off your body’s ability to utilize as much serotonin in the future.

So how do you get serotonin in healthier ways?

1. Massages

Massages, according to the University of Miami School of Medicine, increase serotonin by 28 percent while dropping the stress hormone cortisol by 31 percent. Not a bad way to get more serotonin in your life.

2. Improve gut health

This is a deep topic, but let’s just say probiotics that come from foods like sauerkraut, yogurt, kefir and more can make your body get more out of the nutrients you already digest.

3. Exercise in the sun

Sun and exercise both increase serotonin production. Combine them and you’re a regular serotonin factory. Your appetite is being severely suppressed because of all that serotonin.

That’s why you’ve probably forgotten to eat when you’ve gone skiing, biking, hiking or anything else that combines fun and sun.

4. Cut your stress

Remember how stress and serotonin don’t get along?

One client who signed on for our services used three words to describe his life before coaching: chaos, confusion and frenzy.

High-performing men tend to take on too much work for themselves and never learn to automate, delegate, eliminate and optimize their business life.

5. Get more done

One way to cut stress is to simply get more done in the hours you have at work. Getting things done also boosts your serotonin. Every time you cross something off your to-do list, you literally can improve serotonin levels in your brain if getting things done influences your mood for the better.

But if you’re always tied to your business, you’re still not getting the serotonin you need to lose weight or stay in shape. That’s why my business partner Bill went from being an Olympic-caliber cyclist to being a health catastrophe waiting to happen in only a handful of years.

Now, Bill and I are productivity masters and can show you a better way to work. One that will help you maximize the hours you have in a day, which will in turn help you lose weight and feel more energetic.

In short, we can guide you to a place where you look and feel the best you ever have in your life. We’re not exercise coaches, but we do know a thing or two about striving to fulfill your potential, growing a business and leading a more fulfilling life.
