If you want freedom, what you really need is more structure.

Do you value your freedom enough to be structured?

I’m guessing you don’t.

The men we walk with in the Lions Pride value their freedom.

Freedom is the reason most of these high-achieving men started businesses.

It’s a driving force behind almost everything they do.

And yet most of our men feel pinned by their to-do lists.

They feel disheveled and worn out from constantly tackling a list that never seems to shrink.

And because they feel that way, they take away their own freedoms to go at their to-do lists.

“Just one more hour, honey. I swear.”

Your wife gets fed up being the only one watching kids after hours while you pound away at your work life.

You get frustrated and feel guilty that you can’t be there with them.

All of this stems from a lack of structure.

Freedom comes from structure

Freedom doesn’t come from owning a business. It never has.

Freedom comes from a solid structure within your business.

Got that? I’ll repeat it.

Freedom comes from structure.

You want more time? Get more structured?

You want to get home in time for dinner? Structure your business better.

You want to be able to take off mid-day for a family event? Structure.

But if you put all the emphasis on freedom, you won’t have a lot of it.

On the other hand, the more structured you can make your business life, the more freedom comes into your personal life. And your business life, for that matter.

I can’t emphasize this enough, Lions: the only way to build freedom into your life is to build the right structure.

Be the flagpole, not the flag

It’s still spring, so you’re probably seeing some windy weather.

That’s perfect for kites, but hard on flags.

Flags are used to pretty much just hanging around lifeless.

Complete idleness might sound like freedom to you.

And it can be, for a time.

But what happens over time is that the wind pressure picks up, and the flag can no longer idle.

It has no choice but to wave for all it’s worth.

Are you the flag?

Do you let yourself idle through work most days and then wave like crazy when a stiff breeze comes along?

Be real with yourself here. Even as a high achiever, it’s OK to admit that you aren’t always maximizing your time.

That’s what the rock-star men who join our movement have admitted to themselves. That no matter how hard they work, they could always be working harder.

What they need to learn is better structure.

They needed to be a flagpole, not a flag. Think about that. The flagpole is cemented in place. It has a structure that it won’t leave behind.

So even if the wind is beating on the flag and making life miserable at the top of the pole, the pole is unmoved.

Unbothered.

Free.

Be the flagpole, Lions. Not the flag.

Structure means freedom. A flag can't fly without a flagpole.

I used to be the flag

In 1983, I was in the restaurant industry. If you know anything about food service, you know that everyone in the industry endures a constant stream of interruptions.

It’s windy enough to tear a flag right off the flagpole.

That’s not freedom.

And I was the flag.

Sick of freedom being beaten out of me by the whims of others.

Freedom comes from structure.

On a plane from Dallas to Atlanta, I read a book that opened my eyes. It was called “How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life,” by Alan Lakein.

At that time, I realized that time management is a topic that’s completely missed in the school system. Starting in kindergarten all the way up through university, no one teaches this stuff!

It’s more like parenting: you want to be the best you can at it, but your situation feels so unique that you just ask for help from the people closest to you and struggle on.

Worse, you flounder.

Well, after I read this book, my core values changed since I knew I needed more structure.

And my need for freedom and spontaneity couldn’t outrank it because one is made possible by the other.

Since then, my seventh core value has been “order and clarity.”

And yet spontaneity follows right behind it at number eight.

I know that I couldn’t have both if I didn’t have order.

The same goes for you, Lions.

Freedom school

In the Lions Pride, we take driven, accomplished men and give them more structure.

We’ve helped men whittle down to-do lists to something manageable just by better managing priorities and providing a better structure.

Two men who recently joined the Pride brought us to-do lists on

  • Notebooks.
  • Journals.
  • Binders.
  • Scrap paper with hand-written notes.
  • The backs of receipts.
  • Sticky notes that had been spread all over their businesses.

We unified them into a single system and provided a structure for more order and clarity.

After that, the freedom comes.

So in that sense, The Lions Pride is sort of like the structure school that your schooling has lacked. The freedom school that every successful man needs.

Without it, you’re the flagpole, not the flag.

If you’re sick and tired of being the flag waving for wind coming from who knows where, own that feeling.

Then do something about it.

You might not think we can help. That the magnitude of your problems is too much.

You might think you can do it on your own.

Maybe you’re right. Our methods aren’t for everybody—they require an accomplished man who wants to accomplish more.

But can you afford finding out the hard way?

I want to offer you a free 1-on-1 video call to examine the structure in your life and business. In 30 minutes, let’s just see if my business partner Bill or I can give you some things that will give you the structure to let spontaneity back into your life.

Let’s do this together.

Structure means freedom. A flag can't fly without a flagpole.
