The Deciding Factor: How to Save Time, Reduce Stress, and Find Joy

Can a single decision replace hundreds?

As Tim Ferris points out, we often waste too much time on decision-making. For example, can you create a “blanket policy” that makes it easier for your team to make decisions on your behalf or remove the decision-making process completely?

When we talk about accelerating your business at TLP, we mean exactly that—using the right tools to make smart decisions that will benefit your company. If executed properly, it can make all the difference between a rushed decision and a fast decision.

A rushed decision is usually made when you are feeling overwhelmed. (You’ll often feel the consequences of it later).

A fast decision is based on a strategic and well-laid plan. (You’ve often prepared for this well in advance).

In his YouTube video, Terry Schmidt encourages you to develop a strategic plan so that you can “Think big. Plan smart. Act fast.” and offers five key steps to consider when building your own decision-making tool.

Clarify key drivers & issues. Why are you doing this plan now? What is most important? What are we ultimately trying to do—and to avoid?

Define your boundaries. What is both within and outside of scope? What are we willing to lose? What must we protect at all costs?

Identify stakeholders and their roles.
Who is involved, concerned by or affected by results? When these are at odds or in conflict, who takes priority?

Choose the methodology.
What strategic system works best for you? What is the chain of command? What decision-making authority levels or limits should (or shouldn’t) we have in place?

Identify milestones and next steps.
Break down your plan into specific steps and phases, schedule, and assign responsibilities. Is everyone clear on how they contribute? Who is ultimately responsible?

Luckily, badass business leaders like you know that TLP makes it easy by putting all of this into one document—your One Page Business Plan.

We can’t emphasize enough how helpful this process has been for the team over the years. And we guarantee it will help you refocus your priorities while you reexamine your business (and your life!).

After all, if life is only a matter of time— what can you prioritize to take better advantage of yours?
