The ONE Business Asset You Must Protect at All Costs
Taking care of the most critical part of your business: YOU
Being a Founder CEO is a badge of honor that we all proudly pin to our collars. We work our tail off because we know it’s worth it—to our families, our teams, our communities, our customers.
But if you're winning at work and not in your life, are you truly winning at all?
That’s not a rhetorical question. The answer is NO.
You are the most valuable driver to the success of your business and your contribution to the world.
When you fail to care for all the bits and bolts that contribute to your highest functioning—your physical and mental health, your stress levels, your relationships, your hobbies, your rest, etc—you are failing your business (and, let’s be honest, everything else).
In his must-read book, Essentialism, Greg McKeown says “The best asset we have for making a contribution to the world is ourselves. If we underinvest in ourselves, and by that I mean our minds, our bodies, our spirits, we damage the very tool we need to make our highest contribution.”
Basically, it’s damn near impossible for an unhealthy Founder CEO to have a healthy business—at least not for long. Read more on how to prioritize your health and wellbeing for true success.
So what can you do to “protect the asset”?
Start with a high-performance routine.
Routines bring order to our day and put high-performance on autopilot. Start by setting a series of small goals for yourself that contribute to a much bigger plan. Not too many, badass—you want to set yourself up for success, not drown in the details. Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered with plenty of ideas to motivate you and a daily planner to help you stick with it.
Don’t be short-sighted.
All too often our long-term goals get hijacked by the need for instant gratification. One workaround is to create short-term incentives that play to our advantage while working towards our end goal. As this Gallup article points out, "when we can see an immediate payoff, we are more likely to change our behavior in the moment."
Consider this: Exercise is often the first thing we eliminate from our “to do” list when we’re busy, but something as simple as a 20-minute workout can boost your mood and productivity for up to 12 hours. Do it first—and reap the lasting benefits!
Wind down to wind up.
An overtired body and overtaxed brain are of no use to you. You need to step away in order to come back refreshed, so it is important to make sleep a priority.
Use this FREE Sleep Assessment and Tip Sheet to harness the power of sleep and energize every waking moment.
You are the only one who will put yourself first—if you put yourself last, you won’t last. Full stop.
